Does Merino Really Work on a Bike in Summer?

The answer is an unequivocal yes. Mons is not a huge company, yes, we are an established brand in the world of snow, but why would we risk our reputation and success forcing a square peg in a round hole?

We’re not, we believe that merino will revolutionise the way people look at bike apparel, in fact we’re so sure that we have been supporting Crankworx for the last 4 years through the Dual Speed and Style event and have steadily been building a team of riders who reflect what we want to achieve.

One of my favorite ways to illustrate why Mons works for bikes is comparing the qualities of merino wool to that of native New Zealanders. They are remarkably similar, both will both do everything in their power to make you feel comfortable, but if you push them, you will find they are surprisingly tough.

Rampage a legendary freeride mountain bike contest held every year close to Zion National Park in Utah. It pits a handful of the world’s most talented and courageous riders against an impossibly steep mountain and some jumps that would make Evel Knievel’s prostate twitch.

One of the regulars in the lineup is New Zealander Conor Macfarlane. He is quintessentially Kiwi; softly spoken, has impeccable manners and is built like a stone farmhouse. Each rider gets two runs, but in most cases anyone who lands their first run doesn’t go back for a second such is the risk. In 2016 on his first run, Conor attacked the mountain and was served a big shit sandwich, tomahawking with his bike down a very steep slope. He didn’t complain though, minus a decent amount of bark he made his way back to the top and hit it again.

The gods were not smiling on Conor on that crisp Utah day in late October. On his second run he was served pudding in the shape of a big slice of shit pie. There wasn’t much skin left on Conor's right arm or face, but there was still a wry smile and a well-preserved Mons merino.

The moral of this story is that if a Mons jersey can survive on Conor Macfarlane at Rampage we’re pretty sure it will take anything you can throw at it.

At Mons we are passionate about merino wool, we know that it is the most versatile fabric in the world when it comes to regulating temperature and keeping you dry no matter what your sport of the season.

Test us out we guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
