SANDSTONE AND SNOW

Watch Aspen-based skier Colter Hinchliffe put his merino through its paces as he climbs multi-pitch towers and skis untracked descents in search of a different kind of ski adventure.

Last winter, instead of exploring Alaska, British Columbia, or Japan, Aspen-based skier Colter Hinchliffe found himself in a different kind of outdoor paradise: Moab, Utah.
Few would think of the sandstone mecca — a well-established recreational fantasy land for climbers and bikers — as a place to push one’s ability skiing. However, Colter was inspired by the terrain and grabbed a pair of skis to explore the peaks of the La Sal mountain range. Recruiting friend and fellow skier Tim Durtschi as his exploration and new climbing partner, together the two accomplished a myriad of objectives including rappelling into couloirs, finding deep untracked powder, and climbing Tim’s first tower.
